Starfish Prime @ Sounds of RVA Showcase @ Bogart’s, 5-18-13
Starfish Prime closed out the night last Saturday at the Sounds of RVA Showcase at Bogart’s. They were loud, kinetic and frenetic. While they played without their bassist, they still filled the airspace with rock for days. Check out the set yourself recorded by Chris Larson. Thanks, Chris! Stay tuned for the middle band of the evening, Zac Hryciak and the Jungle Beat, whose recording needed a little special attention.
Boxwave @ Sounds of RVA Showcase @ Bogart’s, 5-18-13
We had our first showcase this past Saturday, and Boxwave opened the evening. Not only was blood drawn, but the funk quotient reached dangerous levels. Check out the video below as well as the audio from the set, recorded by Chris Larson.
Everyone Dies In The End - Demo
Post-rock professionals Everyone Dies In The End are stepping up as a fresh band with a brand-new demo. The demo is actually a recording from a practice, and it looks like the band will be releasing more albums like this in the future. Featuring members of bands like Lord By Fire and My War, EDITE plays instrumental post-rock tracks that are at some points ambient while building in anticipation. Check out “Who Are You, Whom I So Faintly Hear” which is not only grammatically correct but also sometimes sparse and other times explosive.
Check out Everyone Dies in the End’s first show on Friday, 5/24 @ Strange Matter with Swells (Denver) and 1TBA. Early show. 5 pm doors, all ages, $5.
ALSO catch them at the Sounds of RVA Showcase @ Bogart’s on July 20 with Sea of Storms and Time Machines. 9 pm doors, 21+, $5.
RIYL: Explosions in the Sky, Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Shy, Low, and Fight Cloud

Superjam featuring members of Soundstorm, The Brotherhood, People’s Blues of Richmond, and Roger Pouncey’s Quintet @ Bogart’s in the Fan, 4-19-13
This evening of music was fun, sexy, and perfect. Two of the amazing musicians who performed (Brittany O’Neill on vocals and Justin Perkins on bass) are apparently taking their musical gifts to other locations, so this was one of their final RVA jams. The whole lineup was:
BRITTANY O’NEILL - VOCALS
BRANDON PAYNE - GUITAR
JUSTIN PERKINS - BASS
NELSON VALENTINE - KEYS
NEKO WILLIAMS - DRUMS
JACKSON SHURLDS - TRUMPET
TREY L. SORRELLS - ALTO SAXOPHONE
CHRIS SCLAFANI - TENOR SAXOPHONE
When the band played D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” the entire place was making out. There were some seriously sexy grooves, and everyone in this super-jam brought it all. Perkins’ 6-string bass kept things funky the entire time.
Lightfields - “1979”
Lightfields played a sweet show @ Bogart’s last night (4-20-13) along with Tungs and Naked Baby (whom I missed). Lightfields kept the night theme-appropriate and played some Pink Floyd. They also covered this song by the Smashing Pumpkins. Overlook the unsteady hands, okay? I totally thought I could dance and take a good video.

We are working on some incredible line-ups, and the first show will be SATURDAY, MAY 18! (Bands TBA)
In addition to a memory-making show experience, Bogart’s has some other bonuses!

Victor Haskins - “Smiling with the Sun”
As we prophesied back in November, Victor Haskins is destined for great things. He is about to release his new album The Truth, featuring drums (Tony Martucci), bass (Tom Baldwin), piano/keys (Steve Kessler), alto sax (Luis Hernandez) and, of course, trumpet by Mr. Haskins. It looks like Haskins will be heading to South Africa in early March via VCU Jazz. We look forward to hearing music that will be influenced by this trip.
Free jazz, bebop, and electric keys demarcate this track, “Smiling with the Sun,” posted on Haskins’ soundcloud. Trumpet takes center stage during the first and last parts, and a middle section is a page right out of jazz fusion territory with video game synth.
Come out and celebrate The Truth’s release @ Bogart’s both March 26 and March 27. Free! If you can’t wait that long, you can catch Haskins @ Bogart’s 2/27; 3/9 @ The Barrel Thief; and 3/24 @ St. James Episcopal Church for “Jazz Mass.”
