Hell yeah! Come out to the 2nd Showcase on June 22 @ Bogart’s for some intense post-rock and punk bands.
We had our first Showcase a couple weeks back, and it was a blast! Make sure you don’t miss out this time! The bands are Subterranea Collective’s Basmati and Freaky J and the Bears as well as special guests Lars Von Trier and the Masters of Industry.
Edit: We promise you’ll feel like you’re looking at Marilyn Monroe’s boobs as you crack wise about something or another.
Get sloshed with Positive No for Cinco de Mayo!
RVA’s favorite oxymorons Positive No have a fantastic little cocktail for those with a sweet tooth.
Green Tea Margaritas have a bunch of rad ingredients that make us want to imbibe before 10 in the morning (pssh, it’s Friday, what). Start out with green tea ice cubes and finish with a stick of ROCK CANDY. My dentist is already way pissed.
Oh yeah, and don’t forget Positive No’s upcoming show May 17 @ Gallery 5 with The Snowy Owls and Canary Oh Canary. 7:30 doors, 8:00 pm music, all ages, $5. Pregame with a green tea margarita or two and you’ll be in perfect shape.

Barren Girls - “Deal With the Devil”
Barren Girls are a new group with half the members being from Raleigh and the other half from RVA. This is one out of four tracks on the debut EP called Hell Hymns on Merge Records out April 2 (7” vinyl and digital).
Lead singer Carla Wolff wanted to start an all-female punk band, and she enlisted Ash Van Eijk (drums) and Jenny Williams (keys, who had never played an instrument before this) and started the band Lazy Janes. They soon added badass bassist Fran Araya and the band Barren Girls was formed.
Influenced by bands like X, T.S.O.L., 45 Grave, and Dead Moon, Barren Girls play supreme garage rock with a punk edge. Distorted guitars, crackling vocals, loose drums, and moody keys take these chicks to the top.
Come see Barren Girls for FREE @ Steady Sounds on Saturday (3/30), 5 pm. Browse records while you listen!

Nick Coward & The Last Battle - Thieves
The long-awaited album from Nick Coward and The Last Battle has finally been released (today)! The band’s last album was an EP that came out in September of 2010. From the opening notes of “Thieves (Something from Nothing),” the folk band is elevated to the beyond. The voices in unison with Coward as well as the grandiose arrangement take the sound to Polyphonic Spree territory. The song doesn’t simply continue in the same fashion. The moments of quiet keep providing a buildup that continues on before leaving on a soft note.
The Baroque folk continues in “Beast,” with subtle cello bowing by Constance Sisk. The lush soundscape is partly Americana and somehow has bright elements during the dark arrangement.
The companion piece to the first track is the last track, “Nothing from Something (Builders).” The delicate acoustic instrumentation is offset by Coward’s whispering vocals. The piece has a slow, country sway like M. Ward’s solo stuff.
The band celebrated the release of the album with a show this past Friday @ The Camel (photo far below by Zach Davis). The next show is April 27 - details TBA.

Darsombra - “Climax Community” album trailer
Darsombra is an audio-visual performance duo coming through Richmond tomorrow, 2/15 @ Strange Matter w/ Junius (MA shoegaze), Degollado (Shenandoah valley noise) & Head Molt (hometown hoes). Ready yourself for some seriously trippy ish. Climax Community is the current release of which the band is touring in support. Ambient, shoegaze Pinky Floyd build ups take you hostage for a little while, but it’s all good.
