BAND VANS, am I right?

Any band which approaches the level of touring needs a reliable, well-oiled machine known fondly as a band van.  There are certain truths that bands learn to accept when they reach this point in their careers.  You have to fit x number of people and their gear into a certain limited amount of space.  It is a right of passage for your van to break down on tour.  Van rides have broken up bands.  You want to make sure to not attract lurking police officers who would pull you over for your colorful and music-related bumper stickers.  Okay, that last one might just be personal preference.

We couldn’t help but notice a few RVA bands experiencing van break-downs in recent times.  For instance, Goldrush enjoyed a setback when heading from Asheville to Nashville and Instagram(m)ed their time on the side of the road.

What do you do with the van when you’re not on tour? It usually sits in the street not only taking up valuable parallel parking spaces from your pissed off neighbors but also atrophies in a way which affects its performance.

Richmond bands - How cool would it be if several touring bands got together, pooled their funds, and shared a van? Cost of repairs, insurance, taxes, and so forth would be split among the bands. When one band arrives back in Richmond from tour, they hand the four wheeler over to the next band in line needing to head out on the road.  It would be like a co-op.

Let’s say that there are a few weeks which aren’t spoken for. Perhaps the van could be rented out to people for odd jobs such as moving, etc. to offset costs.

Lastly, check out some band vans from around the country in this 2012 Paste Magazine article.

Bon Voyage to all bands hitting the road this year!

Unfortcho, the closest the tour gets to RVA is 4/18 @ the 9:30 Club.

The Southern Belles - “Getaway” (debut, live @ Nowhere Bar, Athens, GA, 5-30-13)(video by Ben Butterworth)

The Belles are the loose!  RVA faves The Southern Belles are currently spreading their rocking wealth around the South, and they are trying out some new tunes on unsuspecting audiences.  Here is “Getaway” which references RVA’s hookers and describes Richmond throughout the aughts.  The song really swings and features some collective scatting.

The Belles will be back in Richmond on 6/7 for a show @ The Camel with Antero

EDIT: Here is another new one called “I’m a Wreck”:

Hot Dolphin - Hotter Dolphiner

Our buds in Hot Dolphin have just released a tape of 4 cuts, and they are currently on tour to promote it. We Richmonders can get our grubby paws on the clear hot pink beauties on 4/14 @ Banditos with Faux Ferocious and Nervous Ticks

Heavy distortion fills these tracks, and the garage rock gets bawdy and unapologetic.  Striking syncopated drumbeats (Tim Falen) provide a great canvas for Lindsey Spurrier's processed noise vocals on “Animal.”  From the count-off on “In Between,” the track is heavy and Ramones-y.  The guitar solo (Robert Barrow) is sloppy, bent, and perfect while the bass-line (Alison Hancock, married to Barrow) is an ever-present beacon.

If you’re in these cities, you need to check out these guys:

4/8 - Nashville, TN @ Springwater w/ Ttotals
4/9 - Memphis, TN @ The Lamplighter w/ Concord America, & The Sheiks
4/10 - Atlanta, GA @ Drunken Unicorn w/ Concord America, & The Illiterates
4/11 - Athens, GA @ Max Canada w/ Shehehe
4/14 - Richmond, VA @ Banditos w/ Faux Ferocious, & The Nervous Ticks

Sundials/Tatlins Tower Split - “Assailant”/”Socialism in America” respectively

RVA loves Sundials, and so it’s great news that the band has a new split 7” out with Tatlin’s Tower. It is being released through Kiss of Death Records.  You can preview one song from each band now.  Sundials’ “Assailant” is a midtempo song with melodic verses.  Lead singer Harris Mendell’s borderline falsetto is very prominent in the mix and cuts through you with each syllable.  “What could have drawn assailants here?  I don’t want to think about it…”

Here is “Dan Worships the Devil,” the other Sundials track on the split (as furnished by Tatlin’s Tower).  It’s a bit looser and trashier - just like the devil himself:

Former Champions - Pastiche

The Former Champions have been recording live shows like crazy of late.  A combination of some of their recent sets (2013) has been released as an album, Pastiche.  The album was recorded by Joseph Collet and mixed by Champs drummer Geoff Bakel.  I’m not gonna lie, this could use a little mastering as it’s kinda quiet.

Showcasing the Former Champs’ current sound, as it is always in flux, Pastiche begins with a nine-minute “Zero.”  Cover songs include “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” by the Allman Brothers (affectionately dubbed “Liz Reed” by the Champs and most jam-friendly folks), and they do up a helluva version.  Check out the drum solo near the end of the track. The band even tries out a Cuban remix of “Waves.”  It sounds like it could be a later era Trey song. “Worldwide Traveler” is a spacey disco euphoria that sounds like late-70s Grateful Dead.  “. .  .To that bar where we smoked some hashish…” is how the song begins, and then ten minutes of intense jams.
