Hot Dolphin - Hotter Dolphiner

Our buds in Hot Dolphin have just released a tape of 4 cuts, and they are currently on tour to promote it. We Richmonders can get our grubby paws on the clear hot pink beauties on 4/14 @ Banditos with Faux Ferocious and Nervous Ticks

Heavy distortion fills these tracks, and the garage rock gets bawdy and unapologetic.  Striking syncopated drumbeats (Tim Falen) provide a great canvas for Lindsey Spurrier’s processed noise vocals on “Animal.”  From the count-off on “In Between,” the track is heavy and Ramones-y.  The guitar solo (Robert Barrow) is sloppy, bent, and perfect while the bass-line (Alison Hancock, married to Barrow) is an ever-present beacon.

Sundials/Tatlins Tower Split - “Assailant”/”Socialism in America” respectively

RVA loves Sundials, and so it’s great news that the band has a new split 7” out with Tatlin’s Tower. It is being released through Kiss of Death Records.  You can preview one song from each band now.  Sundials’ “Assailant” is a midtempo song with melodic verses.  Lead singer Harris Mendell’s borderline falsetto is very prominent in the mix and cuts through you with each syllable.  “What could have drawn assailants here?  I don’t want to think about it…”

Here is “Dan Worships the Devil,” the other Sundials track on the split (as furnished by Tatlin’s Tower).  It’s a bit looser and trashier - just like the devil himself:

Former Champions - Pastiche

The Former Champions have been recording live shows like crazy of late.  A combination of some of their recent sets (2013) has been released as an album, Pastiche.  The album was recorded by Joseph Collet and mixed by Champs drummer Geoff Bakel.  I’m not gonna lie, this could use a little mastering as it’s kinda quiet.

Showcasing the Former Champs’ current sound, as it is always in flux, Pastiche begins with a nine-minute “Zero.”  Cover songs include “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” by the Allman Brothers (affectionately dubbed “Liz Reed” by the Champs and most jam-friendly folks), and they do up a helluva version.  Check out the drum solo near the end of the track. The band even tries out a Cuban remix of “Waves.”  It sounds like it could be a later era Trey song. “Worldwide Traveler” is a spacey disco euphoria that sounds like late-70s Grateful Dead.  “. .  .To that bar where we smoked some hashish…” is how the song begins, and then ten minutes of intense jams.

Itchy Hearts - “Use Me”

The Itchy Hearts have just uploaded a slew of new videos from their recent tour.  Check out various shows, including a house show with overclappers.  Have I ever mentioned my disdain for people who clap a rhythm at shows, especially when the musician him- or herself is not encouraging such?

The band is also giving away, for a limited time, some mp3s of songs they’ve done along tour.  Check it out:

It looks like they’ve got some new merch, too, so get yourself a beanie or something.

Itchy Hearts will announce Spring Tour dates soon.
